Roman Mosaic Building

Constanța, Constanța

The Roman Mosaic Building is located in Piața Ovidiu in Constanța, Constanța county, on the terraces leading down to the ancient port of Tomis. The ensemble was discovered in 1959, during construction works. The mosaic covered the floor of a large hall used in the commercial activity of the Roman city.

The pavement preserves geometric and plant motifs, made of small pieces of colored stone. Below the level of the hall there are vaulted rooms, related to the storage of goods. The terraces show how the connection between the city and the harbor quays was organized. The building went through several stages of development in Antiquity, and the preserved fragments are protected in a museum space.
