Romanian Athenaeum

Bucharest

In George Enescu Square in the center of Bucharest, near Calea Victoriei, stands the Romanian Athenaeum. The concert hall was built between 1886 and 1888 according to the plans of the French architect Albert Galleron. The columned facade, the dome and the medallions of rulers are the building's best-known features, which houses the "George Enescu" Philharmonic.

In the circular hall, the fresco by Costin Petrescu traces episodes from Romanian history. Staircases, columns and ceiling decoration complete the interior. The organ behind the stage was built after a fundraiser initiated by George Enescu.
