Romanian Soldier Monument in Carei

Carei, Satu Mare

The Romanian Soldier Monument in the center of Carei is a sculptural ensemble created by Vida Gheza and inaugurated in 1964. It commemorates the battles of October 1944, when the Romanian army arrived in Carei, and is the site of the ceremonies dedicated to the Army Day. The composition brings together several stone elements, arranged in front of an obelisk that dominates the square.

The figures and volumes have distinct meanings: the peasant face evokes uprisings, the gate recalls sacrifices, and the woman planting a flower expresses hope and life. The soldier represents liberation, while the shape of the obelisk refers to the eternal flame and the church towers of Maramureș. The ensemble can be viewed from the public space around it.
