Saint Alexander Cathedral in Alexandria
Saint Alexander Cathedral is located on Independenței Street in Alexandria. The masonry church was started in 1869 and consecrated in 1898, after several stages of construction. It has a cross plan, a large tower above the nave and two smaller towers near the entrance. The open porch, supported on stone columns, highlights the main facade.
Inside are the murals by Ștefan Luchian and Constantin Artachino, restored several times. The gilded limewood iconostasis, the stained glass windows and the floor with decorative motifs complete the ensemble. The cathedral is an active place of worship; visitors viewing the paintings and furnishings must respect services and follow staff instructions.
