Saint George Church in Bârlad

Bârlad, Vaslui

The Church of Saint George in Bârlad was built between 1810 and 1818 by the Greek merchants of the wool-cloth makers’ guild. The trefoil plan, the three towers and the thick brick and stone walls define the body of the church. The ensemble also preserves the gate tower, known as Titinaș's Tower, after the nickname of the founder Ioniță Bardaș.

The church and the tower were restored in the period 2019–2023. The works included strengthening, re-roofing and reorganizing access to the tower. The facades and the sequence of volumes can be seen from the courtyard, and inside the visit is adapted to the activity of the parish. The history of the guild that financed the construction links this church to the old commercial life of Bârlad.
