Saint George Church in Curtea de Argeș
The Church of Saint George in Curtea de Argeș stands on Basarabilor Boulevard. The current edifice was erected between 1934 and 1936, after the older church was destroyed by fire. The design by the architect Dimitrie Ionescu-Berechet has a cross-shaped plan, with a facade and porch in the Brâncovenesc style.
The interior is decorated with Byzantine-style painting, and the arches and columns of the porch frame the entrance. The old church played a part in the history of the town: for a time it housed the flag of Tudor Vladimirescu and the relics of Saint Filofteia, before the fire in 1913. The present church still serves the parish and was restored in the early 2000s.
