Saint George Princely Church in Ocnele Mari
The Princely Church of Saint George in Ocnele Mari was built in 1676-1677, on the site of an older church. The construction was supported by the lord Statie, the treasurer of the salt mine, and the privileges of the old princely church were transferred to the new foundation in the time of Constantin Brâncoveanu. Its history shows the close connection between religious life and the administration of salt exploitation.
The building has a cross-shaped plan and two towers, the one above the narthex having the role of a bell tower. The fresco painting dates from 1717–1718 and has seen subsequent interventions. The exterior and proportions of the church can be seen from the premises, and visiting the interior depends on the church schedule.
