Saint John the New Monastery in Suceava
The monastery of Saint John the New is located in the municipality of Suceava and has the church of Saint George in the center. Its construction began in 1514, during the reign of Bogdan III, and ended in 1522, under Ștefăniță Vodă. The painting made during the reign of Petru Rareș contributed to the inclusion of the church in the group of painted monuments from Moldavia included in the UNESCO heritage.
The church, the entrance tower and the monastic buildings form one of the important religious ensembles of the city. Its history is linked to the cult of Saint John the New, whose relics were brought here in 1589. In 2026, restoration work is underway, which affects the organization of visits and services. The reliquary has been temporarily moved within the ensemble. Before the visit, the access situation must be checked, without assuming that all the buildings and interior paintings are available to the public.
