Saint Michael Roman Catholic Cathedral in Alba Iulia
The Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint Michael is located in the Alba Carolina Citadel, in Alba Iulia. The current construction was built starting from the thirteenth century, over an older church. The stone walls, Romanesque arches and Gothic vaults preserve the traces of several stages of construction. At the western entrance, the portal with a pointed arch stands out, and the southern tower dominates the facade.
Inside are the funerary monuments of Ioan de Hunedoara, members of his family, as well as Queen Isabella and Prince Ioan Sigismund. On the northern side, the Lázó chapel, built in 1512, adds Renaissance decorations to the medieval ensemble. The cathedral is an active place of worship; visiting the church and access to the tower have separate conditions, displayed by the administrator.
