Saint Nicholas Cathedral in Tulcea
The Cathedral of Saint Nicholas in Tulcea is a church of Byzantine inspiration, with a cross-shaped plan and three towers. The current building was erected near the site of an older, wooden church. The foundation stone was laid in 1862, and the inscription at the entrance records the year 1865. The stone and brick construction is recognizable by the light-colored facade, the central entrance and the towers that rise above the roof.
Inside, the vaults are supported by massive pillars, and the oil painting was made in 1905–1906 by D. Marinescu, a professor at the Fine Arts School in Bucharest. The painted compositions follow Renaissance influences, different from the Byzantine form of construction. The bells, also mentioned in the official presentation of the city, were cast in Bavaria in 1882. The church remains a place of worship of Tulcea.
