Salt Mountain in Slănic

Slănic, Prahova

Salt Mountain in Slănic is a geological reserve of 2 hectares, in the Baia Baciului area, protected since 1954. It was formed when a gallery of an old salt mine collapsed, and the landslide exposed the salt massif. In the middle of it was a lake, Grota Miresei, 20 meters deep.

The earthquake of March 4, 1977 cracked the eastern side of the mountain. The concrete pillars and steel cable anchors installed afterwards did not stop the collapses: parts of the mountain collapsed in 1993, 1999 and 2006, and the last collapse covered the lake. Near the mountain are the salt lakes Lacul Mare and Baia Porcilor, from the same Baia Baciului complex.
