Salt Mountain in Sovata
The Salt Mountain in Sovata, Mureș County, is a formation near the Red and Green Lakes. Here, the layer of earth covering the salt deposit has been washed away, leaving the salt exposed. Pale surfaces, grooves and ridges shaped by water stand out among the trees on the slope.
Rain and water from melting snow gradually change the shape of the salt walls. That is why the formations seen along the path can look different from one year to the next. The formation can be seen while walking on the paths around Lake Ursu, in the area of the two small lakes. The exposed salt right next to the lakes shows Sovata's geological peculiarity at a glance: a landscape formed above a salt massif.
