Sâmboteanu Fountain
The Sâmboteanu fountain is located on Aleea Fântânii in Târgu Jiu, near the old water tower. Its layout is related to the official Ianache Sâmboteanu, who held the title of clucer, and the city's water supply at the end of the eighteenth century. From here, the water carriers filled the barrels mounted on carts, to take the water to the households and shops of the town.
The monument preserves the covered central building and the surrounding basin, visible from the public space of the alley. The fountain has undergone several repairs, including the 1902 restoration listed on the List of Historic Monuments. Its location is reminiscent of the city's infrastructure before the modern water network, when public fountains and water carts served entire neighborhoods.
