Saon Monastery

Niculițel, Tulcea

On the shore of Lake Saon, in the commune of Niculițel, Tulcea county, the monastery with the same name preserves several stages of Dobrogean monastic life. It was founded in 1846 by monks from Celic-Dere and later became a nunnery.

The complex includes the old church "Ascension of the Lord", built of wood and adobe in 1881, and the masonry church "Protection of the Mother of God", started in 1909. The courtyard, the bell tower, the cells and the windmill are landmarks of the place. From near the buildings you can see the lake and the reeds on its edge.
