Sărata-Monteoru

Buzău County, Romania

Sărata-Monteoru is in Merei commune, Buzău County, in a valley surrounded by wooded hills. The spa resort was inaugurated in 1895 and grew up around its saltwater springs. The village has pools, treatment centers and trails that climb to viewpoints in the surrounding area.

A marked trail leads to the cross on Piscul Mocanului, from where the resort can be seen. Bronze Age remains found on Cetățuia Hill gave their name to the Monteoru culture. The village’s history also includes oil extraction through wells and mine galleries, remembered as part of the area’s industrial heritage.
