Saschiz Refuge Fortress

Saschiz, Mureș

On the hill near Saschiz, in Mureș county, the fortress of refuge preserves walls and towers erected to protect the community. The core of the fortification, with the first enclosure and three towers, dates from the first decades of the fifteenth century. The ensemble was later expanded, including in the seventeenth century, as defense and storage needs changed.

The towers bore names related to their roles, such as the Entrance Tower, also called the Bacon Tower, the Priests' Tower or the Powder Tower. Inside there were rooms for supplies and shelters, and along the walls ran the wall walk. The fortress on the hill is a separate attraction from the fortified church in the center of the village. The climb also allows views of Saschiz; access to the premises must be checked with the local administration, as organized visits and open areas may vary.
