Serifos
Greece
In Greek mythology, Danaë and her infant son Perseus washed ashore on Serifos after being set adrift at sea in a wooden chest. The island, in the western Cyclades, has Chora as its main town, set on a hilltop and crowned by a medieval castle. Iron ore was mined here in the late 19th century, and the mines closed in the 1960s.
