Severin Fortress

Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Mehedinți

Severin Fortress is located in the municipality of Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Mehedinți County, close to the Danube. The medieval fortification played an important role in controlling the roads and the crossing through the Iron Gates area. Its history is linked to the Banat of Severin and the conflicts on the Danube border.

The ruins preserve towers, enclosure walls and traces of a chapel. The layout of the fortress and its defensive moat can be traced on the ground, along with the consolidated sections of masonry. The fortress was destroyed during the wars with the Ottomans, and the main tower still standing is its most visible landmark.
