Shoebill
Balaeniceps rex
Its English name comes from its huge, bulging, shoe-shaped bill, pink with grey markings. The bird stands 110–140 cm tall and lives in freshwater swamps in tropical Africa, from South Sudan to Zambia, where it waits motionless for fish, especially lungfish. BirdLife International lists it as vulnerable because of swamp destruction, disturbance and hunting.
