Federal law enforcement officer Teddy Daniels arrives with his partner Chuck on the small island of Shutter, home to an institution for convicted criminals with mental disorders. They are investigating a female murderer's escape, but nothing in this institution is what it seems. Neither is Teddy Daniels. Is he there to find a missing patient? Or has he been sent to investigate rumors of extreme treatment practices? As Teddy and Chuck draw closer to the truth, it becomes increasingly elusive, and they begin to fear they will never leave Shutter Island. Someone is trying to drive them out of their minds... The film is based on the novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane.
