Simion Florea Marian Memorial House

Suceava, Suceava

The Simion Florea Marian memorial house in Suceava preserves the home where the folklorist and scholar-priest lived and worked between 1886 and 1907. The building dates from the eighteenth century and is located near the Church of Saint Nicholas, in a garden with trees. Simion Florea Marian bought it using the money received from the Romanian Academy for the work "Romanian Folk Ornithology". This is the origin of the name by which the house is still known: “the house won with the pen”.

The museum was opened in 1974. The six rooms bring together period furniture, family objects, manuscripts, letters, photographs and books. The documents follow the work of the author who researched customs related to birth, wedding, funeral and holidays, but also popular beliefs about plants and animals. The objects and the documentary collection are kept by the National Museum of Bucovina. The house brings together, on a single tour, the family rooms and records of the work of a researcher of Romanian traditions.
