Slimnic (Stolzenburg) Fortress
The brick walls of the Slimnic fortress dominate the village located between Sibiu and Mediaș, in Sibiu county. Also known as Stolzenburg, the fortification retains towers, gates and rooms that show how the community was defended. The reddish brick and the high window openings make it easily recognizable from a distance, on the hill above the houses.
The traces of a Gothic chapel and a large church, left unfinished, can be distinguished in the premises. Repeated attacks and destruction changed the building plans; important episodes are recorded in 1529 and 1706. The preserved walls have different heights, and the ruins connect the defensive spaces with those intended for religious life. To enter the citadel, it is necessary to check access with the person who takes care of the monument.
