Snagov Monastery
Siliștea Snagovului, Ilfov
Snagov Monastery stands on an island in Lake Snagov, in Ilfov County. The monastery is first recorded in 1408. The current church was built during the time of Neagoe Basarab, and the complex was rebuilt in several stages. Its island location sets it apart from the other monasteries around Bucharest.
The church, a tower and a fountain are preserved from the old complex. Around them you can see the wooded shores of the lake. The church and its murals are the highlights of a visit, along with the island’s natural setting and its history of successive rebuildings.
