Sohodol Gorge
The Sohodol Gorge is located in Runcu commune, Gorj County, on the edge of the Vâlcan Mountains. The Sohodol River has cut a valley into the limestone, with high walls, arches and stretches of stony riverbed. The road through the valley runs between cliffs and wooded areas, following the river.
The best-known features include the Nostrils (Nările), rounded openings in the rock, and other arches shaped by water. The karst landscape includes caves, fissures and sections where the water sinks underground. The reserve protects the landscape and the plant and animal species associated with the cliffs. On the side towards Runcu, the limestone walls rise directly above the road and the river.
