Sphinx in the Bucegi Mountains
Bucegi Plateau, Dâmbovița
The Bucegi Sphinx stands on the mountain plateau, in Moroeni commune, Dâmbovița County, near Babele. Viewed from a certain angle, the stone block resembles a human head. The formation is made up of conglomerates and has been shaped by weathering and erosion.
Differences in hardness between the rock layers produced an outline that suggests a forehead, nose and chin. The rock rises to over 2,200 meters above sea level, in an open area with alpine vegetation. All around stretch the plateau and the peaks of the massif. The Sphinx lies within the protected area of Bucegi Natural Park.
