Stavropoleos Monastery

Bucharest

In the old center of Bucharest, on Stavropoleos Street, is the monastery of the same name. The church was built in 1724 by Archimandrite Ioanichie and preserves a rich decoration in Brâncovenesc style. The porch, the carved columns and the painting of the facades can be seen from the small courtyard of the ensemble.

The gallery around the courtyard and the buildings added at the beginning of the twentieth century were designed by Ion Mincu. The monastery preserves icons, old books and fragments of carved stone. The church, the courtyard and the gallery are open to visitors; research access to the library and the collection is subject to the monastery's conditions.
