Stephen's Tower in Baia Mare

Baia Mare, Maramureș

The Ștefan Tower rises in Cetății Square in Baia Mare, close to Libertății Square. It was the bell tower of the medieval church of Saint Stephen and remains one of the key landmarks of the old town center. The massive stonework, the clock and the pointed top can be seen from the square, where the open space allows the monument to be viewed from several directions.

The climb to the lookout gallery offers a view over the surrounding rooftops and streets. Access is via narrow stairs with stone and wooden sections. The clock and the bell are part of the story of the building, which has undergone several restorations. The tower is worth including in a walk through the historic center, even if you only view it from outside; before your visit, check whether the climb is open.
