Sucidava Fortress

Corabia, Olt

Sucidava Fortress is in the Celei district of the town of Corabia, Olt County, near the Danube. The fortification preserves the remains of a Roman and Roman-Byzantine stronghold, built over an older settlement. The stone walls and towers protected an important point on the Danube frontier.

The site shows building foundations, portions of the defensive system and traces of an early Christian basilica. A highlight is the secret well, reached through an underground passage leading down to the water source. Near the fortress there are also traces of the bridge built over the Danube in the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great.
