Synagogue in Alba Iulia
The synagogue in Alba Iulia is located in the lower town, on Tudor Vladimirescu street. The masonry building was erected in 1822 for the local Jewish community. It continues the history of older places of prayer, in a city where Prince Gabriel Bethlen had allowed Jews to settle since the seventeenth century. The simple facade and high windows hide a prayer hall organized according to the community's tradition.
In the middle of the hall is the platform for reading the sacred texts, and in the eastern part is placed the ark that keeps the Torah scrolls. Above the vestibule is the gallery reserved for women. The building also preserved a room related to the old judicial functions of the community. Visiting the interior requires prior appointment, according to the official tourist information center in Alba Iulia.
