Synagogue in Carei

Carei, Satu Mare

The Synagogue in Carei is located on Progresului Street and preserves the memory of the city's Jewish community. The building was erected in 1866, then renovated and modified in 1890. The facade has four vertical elements similar to turrets, and in the central part are the tablets of the Law.

In front of the synagogue stands a marble obelisk dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust. The building is no longer used for the usual religious service, but the local tourist information center includes it in the ecumenical route of Carei and announces the possibility of visiting by appointment. For the interior, the visit must be arranged in advance; the exterior can be seen from Progresului street.
