Synagogue in Făgăraș

Făgăraș, Brașov

The synagogue in Făgăraș preserves the memory of the city's Jewish community. Its facade has tall, arched windows and is topped by a central tower. As the community dwindled, the building fell out of use in 1987. The return of cultural activities was prepared through a partnership between the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania, local organizations and the municipality.

The Făgăraș Research Institute and the Țara Făgărașului Community Foundation contributed to the plan for a cultural center in the former prayer hall. The synagogue later hosted exhibitions and performances, including projects that bring the history of the Jewish community back to light. The interior is open during events and activities announced by the organizers; before visiting, check whether an event is scheduled or whether the building can be entered.
