Three Holy Hierarchs Cathedral in Aiud

Aiud, Alba

The Cathedral of the Three Holy Hierarchs in Aiud is located southeast of the medieval fortress, close to the city center. Construction began in 1927 and took place in several stages. Its Byzantine-inspired architecture is modeled on the Hagia Sophia church in Constantinople, and the domes and the facade with the monumental entrance distinguish it from the surrounding buildings.

The sculptors I. Covaci and I. Hoffner took part in the 1974 renovation, while the murals were painted by Eremia Profeta. The church was originally dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Today it is dedicated to Saints Basil, Gregory and John, the Three Hierarchs who were also declared spiritual patrons of Aiud in 2003.
