Tismana Monastery

Tismana Monastery is located in the town of Tismana, Gorj County, on a rocky platform at the foot of the Vâlcan Mountains. The monastery's founding in the fourteenth century is linked to Saint Nicodemus. The walls, towers and monastic buildings surround a courtyard dominated by the church.

Inside, murals, icons and religious objects from different periods survive. The complex has been rebuilt several times, after damage and alterations to its buildings. Nearby are cliffs, forests and the cave linked to the tradition of Saint Nicodemus. The elevated position and the defensive enclosure give the monastery the appearance of a fortress above the Tismana Valley.
