Tomb of Michael the Brave in Turda

Turda, Cluj

The tomb of Michael the Brave is the commemorative place set up south of the center of the Turda municipality, in Cluj county. The memorial commemorates the killing of the voivode in August 1601, after the campaign in Transylvania. In the open landscape stands a stone-clad concrete obelisk, 16.01 meters high, a measure chosen to refer to the year of his death.

The current monument was inaugurated in 1977 and replaced the old wooden memorial cross. The three sides of the obelisk evoke Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania, ruled for a short time by Mihai Viteazul. At the base of the three sides are the coats of arms of the principalities, made of white Simeria marble. The obelisk was made by the sculptor Marius Butunoiu, and the coats of arms and the tomb plaque are the work of Vasile Rus Batin.
