Tower of the old Orthodox church in Deva

Deva, Hunedoara

The tower of the old Orthodox church in Deva is preserved in the area of Călugăreni street, in the former Romanian neighborhood called Pe Vale. It was built in 1727, to the west of a church built in the seventeenth century. The old church was in a lower part of the city, a choice related to the restrictions imposed on the Romanian community at the time.

The church went through a fire and important restoration works, supported by Gheorghe Cantacuzino. In 1865, the dilapidated building was demolished and the stone was reused in another church. The tower remained the intact part of the vanished complex. The monument can be viewed from the outside; its isolated shape preserves the memory of the church and the neighborhood where the old Orthodox community of Deva developed.
