Transfiguration Church in Vatra Dornei
The Transfiguration Church in Vatra Dornei is the Roman Catholic church on Mihai Eminescu Street, close to the town hall. The current construction began in 1895 and was consecrated in 1905. It replaced a wooden church that was dismantled and moved to the Catholic cemetery, where it became a chapel.
The architecture combines simple Romanesque forms with Gothic elements. The interior has a richly decorated altar and vaults and paintings run above the nave. The church was damaged by bombing in the First World War and later repaired; five shells were embedded in the walls as testimony to the events. The church continues to be used by the Catholic parish, and visits must respect the performance of services.
