Trovants Museum in Costești

Costești, Vâlcea

The Trovanților Museum in Costești, Vâlcea county, is an open-air geological reserve, set up at the base of a former sand quarry. Here you can find sandstone concretions, formed by the cementation of sand around cores, in layers of old sediments.

The blocks have different sizes and shapes, rounded, oval or made up of several united lobes. On the slope, you can also see concretions still embedded in the sandy deposit, alongside those freed by erosion. The reserve was declared a protected area in 2005 and documents a natural process of sedimentary rock formation.
