Turkey Vulture
Cathartes aura
From southern Canada to the southern tip of South America flies the turkey vulture, the most widespread vulture of the Americas. Its name comes from its bald red head and dark feathers, which resemble those of the wild turkey. It eats almost only dead animals, which it finds by sight and by smell, detecting the gases released when decay begins.
