Turnu Monastery

Călimănești, Vâlcea

Turnu Monastery stands on the left bank of the Olt River, at the foot of Mount Cozia, within the town of Călimănești. The small church was built in 1676, on the site of a hermits’ settlement. In the nearby rock are the cells associated with the monks Daniil and Misail, evidence of the hermit life that came before the present complex.

The large church, dedicated to the Transfiguration, was built between 1897 and 1901 to a design by the architect Anton Lipinschi. It is on the upper floor of a building, above the refectory. The two churches, the cells and the entrance under the bell tower form a single monastic precinct, surrounded by wooded slopes.
