Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa

Sarmizegetusa, Hunedoara

Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa is located in Sarmizegetusa commune, Hunedoara county, in the Hațeg Depression. The city was founded after the conquest of Dacia, at the beginning of the second century, and became the capital of the Roman province. The ruins show the layout of a town with streets, public squares, temples and administrative buildings.

Among the monuments are the amphitheater, the forum and sanctuaries dedicated to Roman divinities. Walls and foundations show how public spaces and homes were laid out. The nearby museum displays inscriptions, sculptures and objects discovered at the site. The Roman colony lies some distance from the Dacian capital Sarmizegetusa Regia; the two are separate sites with different histories.
