Vaser Valley Narrow-Gauge Railway

Vaser Valley (Vișeu de Sus), Maramureș

The Vaser Valley steam train, known in Romanian as Mocănița, runs from Vișeu de Sus, Maramureș County, on a narrow-gauge forest railway. Construction of the line began in 1932, to carry timber down from the mountains. The route follows the Vaser River through wooded slopes, tight bends and gorge sections.

The tourist trains use steam locomotives and carriages fitted out for passengers. From the windows you can see the stony banks, bridges and forests of the Maramureș Mountains. The station and the depot in Vișeu still recall the valley's logging past, while the tourist trains make the most of its railway heritage.
