Voroneț Monastery

Voroneț, Suceava

The Church of the Voroneț Monastery, in Voroneț, part of the town of Gura Humorului, Suceava County, was built in 1488 by Stephen the Great. The exterior frescoes and the intense blue of the backgrounds have made the monument known throughout the world, and the church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The scene of the Last Judgment unfolds on the western facade, with numerous characters and painted registers. In 1547, Metropolitan Grigore Roșca added the closed porch and supported the painting of the exterior. Inside, the medieval paintings and the tomb of Daniil the Hermit are preserved, both linked to the history of this Moldavian foundation.
