Wooden Church in Cehei

Cehei, Sălaj

The wooden church in Cehei is located on a rise above the village, in Sălaj county. It is dedicated to the Holy Archangels and preserves a Cyrillic inscription from 1765, written by the priest Gheorghe near the entrance door. The shingle roof, the tower with its open gallery and very tall spire can be seen above the houses in the valley.

Inside, fragments of paintings attributed to the painter Nichita have been preserved, based on the similarities with his works from Zalnoc and Derșida. The door frame and the joints of the beams show the techniques used by the craftsmen who built the church. The church underwent restoration work in 2000. Local tradition says that it was brought from Câmpia, but this move is not confirmed by a preserved inscription.
