Wooden Church in Ieud Deal

Ieud, Maramureș

The wooden church in Ieud Deal is located in Ieud commune, Maramureș County, on a slope above the village. Built at the beginning of the seventeenth century, the church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God. Since 1999, it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List, together with other wooden churches in Maramureș.

The shingle roof, the slender tower and the interlocking beams define the exterior of the monument. Inside are wall paintings by Alexandru Ponehalschi. The Ieud Codex, an important manuscript for the history of the Romanian language, was found in the church attic at the beginning of the twentieth century.
