Wooden Church in Plopiș
Plopiș, Maramureș
The wooden church in Plopiș is located in Șișești commune, Maramureș County, in the Cavnic Valley. Built at the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the next, it is dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel. The monument is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The interlocking beams, the slender tower and the porch belong to a church built with contributions from the village families. A document found in the altar records its consecration in 1811. The interior keeps its painted decoration on the wooden walls, while the shingle roof and the woodwork details were redone during restoration work.
