Wooden Church in Șurdești
Șurdești, Maramureș
The wooden church in Șurdești is located in Șișești commune, Maramureș County, in the Țara Chioarului region. Dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, it was built of oak under the master carpenter Ion Macarie. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999.
The very tall tower, the roof with double eaves and the porch with two rows of arches define the shape of the monument. A carved band shaped like a twisted rope runs around the building. The interior preserves wall paintings on wood, and the joints of the beams can be seen on the outside of the polygonal altar.
